These poor racing Galgos.

Dear Friends.

In regards to the interest expressed by an overwhelming number of people, who seem to be concerned for the pain of another being, beings who feel and suffer just as we do, in the case of abuse that now confronts us of ten dogs, who are of the "galgo" breed, and are presently suffering in the town of Chiclana de la Frontera, we have the following to report to you:

A woman brought to our attention the lamentable conditions that the previously mentioned dogs were experiencing. That same afternoon two of the volunteers from Kimba went over to the sight to observe the animals for themselves. The following morning an official denouncement was filed and the Seprona (service for the protection of nature) of the Guardia Civil responded quickly, in their normal manner, and within just a few hours they were at the sight where the dogs were located and were assessing the situation that had been reported. The original discovery of the situation that was previously mentioned took place on 20 December, and as of today the poor galgos, half dead from the filth, are waiting for everyone to finish eating their Christmas candy so that someone would decide the outcome of their future.

Just the same as there are people like us who know how these dogs are feeling, tied with short chains and with no shelter as is the typical case of the miserable existence of the galgos in Spain, there are other people who consider this just another denouncement like any other........

We believe that if a car or motorcycle etc. can be removed and taken away immediately if the driver does not conform to the appropriate requirements of registration, then a living and feeling being should be removed immediately from his/her owner, and at least be turned over to protective custody until the accusations of the denouncement are assessed, if the accused is not complying with the law that theoretically protects them.

Unfortunately, at Kimba all we can do is wait for them to act; wait for them to act always in favor and to the benefit of these poor galgos, because it is they who have the chains around their necks and who sleep in holes in the ground that they themselves have dug alongside the post to which their chain is attached. It is they, too, who are now suffering in very cold weather and with now place at all to find shelter.

All of us together should demand that steps toward the prevention of mistreatment of animals be accelerated. We need to demand that the offices of the government be on top of these denouncements as competent people should be. But sadly, for the administration domestic animals are a competition for the Department of Entertainment (Games and Shows). There are many of us who feel that the mistreatment of animals should cease to be a source of entertainment, and we work day and night toward accomplishing this.

Therefore we should direct our protests to:

These poor racing galgos........

A few days ago an anonymous caller telephoned one of our volunteers from the shelter to tell her of a situation having to do with some 10 galgos and the conversation she had with the "gentleman" who said he was the owner of these dogs, in the town of Chiclana de la Frontera (Caidz).......... where else, but Spain!!

The person took an interest in the galgos upon seeing the them scattered around a property with all of them chained to stakes, on chains that were no more than one meter in length. During the course of the conversation with the individual, he told her that he used them for racing, and that where he actually lives he has many more. This particular property he only uses to sow the soil and to sell various products. He also told her in a very casual manner, which is often the case in the wicked world in which he lives, that since he has so many galgos he chooses the best ones for racing, and when they are no longer of any use to him, he kills them. The woman appeared so horrified by what she was hearing that the man then attempted to undo the damage by telling her that he first takes the dogs to purina (an establishment that exists in Chiclana, with no colntrols, where one can donate dogs), and that if they did not want the dogs then he would put a shotgun to the dog's head and shoot it so that the dog would not suffer.

The person who telephoned the volunteer at our shelter offered signs of where this location was where all the galgos were, and on the afternoon of 19 December this volunteer visited the horrible property and was able to see with her own eyes the terrible conditions that some 11 galgos were enduring (7 of them were tied to stakes, 2 were tied to trash containers, one who had a broken leg was in a small trailer, and one galgo puppy with various mongrel puppies were all loose). All of these galgos were tied with chains of approximately one meter in length, and all of them had a small bed that consisted of a hole in the ground that they themselves had dug, and not one of them had any shelter. The situation for them is becoming alarmingly worse with the cold temperatures now at night.

These pictures that were taken with a mobile telephone camera, with much caution so that the individual would not notice, do not truly reflect the amount of suffering these poor animals are enduring, as is often the case with this poor cursed breed of dog in Spain.

Everything that this volunteer saw, along with the anonymous testimony by the person who made the telephone call to Kimba, was included in a report on 20 December and submitted to the Seprona (Guardia Civil), And they have put to work rapidly.

We hope that justice will soon take measures, and not delay too much, and that these galgos, as well as the others that this man says he has at home, will have time to live a dignified life as soon as possible.
